ORGANIZING TIPS OF THE MONTH: SEPTEMBER 2007
A Better Bathroom
Bathrooms pack a lot of activity into a small space. It is often difficult to find enough places to store all the necessities.
Email me with specific questions about your space dilemmas. I am happy to share ideas. Cheryl@organizeatlanta.com
Readers have been surprised to learn I write my own tip sheet each month. Yes, these are my words. I relay ideas to you from my own experience, other organizers, or conferences and classes. It always thrills me to hear from readers who have used my tips and found a way to make organizing easier for them.
- Use plastic bins below the sink as slide out drawers to contain items which easily topple over or get lost in the cabinet. There are also drawer units available that you can install - measure carefully around pipes to make sure the units will fit.
- Use sturdy baskets on the vanity to hold frequently used items. Awkwardly shaped or tall items such as hairdryer, lotions, and hairspray are ideal for basket storage.
- If you lack vanity space, think vertical. Install wall shelves to hold your necessities. Again baskets and water resistant boxes are decorative and functional storage options.
- A row of coat hooks is handy to hold bathrobes, shower caps, and clothing. Consider installing hooks at a lower height for children to use to easily hang their towels.
- Periodically purge your collection of medicines, makeup, lotions, and hair products. It is easy to push items you no longer use to the back of a cabinet or drawer. Then you find yourself running out of storage space. If you no longer use a product or if it is past its expiration date, toss it.
- Keep knick knacks to a minimum. They are dust catchers and take up prime real estate on a vanity top.
- Measure your drawers’ height, width, and depth and purchase drawer dividers to fit. Instead of opening a drawer full of jumbled stuff, you will have things neatly sorted and available to use.
- Over-the-toilet shelf or cabinet units offer additional storage possibilities. Refrain from storing valuable, breakable, or electrical items over the toilet. It is too easy to have watery accidents.
- Place cleaning supplies and paper towels in each bathroom. It makes a quick clean up easier and eliminates lugging supplies around the house.
- If your bathroom doubles as a reading room, hang a magazine rack on the wall near the toilet.
