ORGANIZING TIPS OF THE MONTH: SEPTEMBER 2006
In Case of a Weather Emergency—Organize!
It’s time to clear out clutter that may be blocking hallways, stairs, and the emergency gathering place in your home. All Sorted Out can help. I even offer a special 10 hour package plan. Contact me at Cheryl@organizeatlanta.com for more information.
- Prepare a “grab and go” bag for each household member. Each bag should contain items such as personal identification, complete change of clothes, flashlight, three day supply of medication, prescription information, bottled water, energy bars, toiletries, recent family photo, and cash. Keep blankets or sleeping bags near the bags.
- Place copies of important documents in a waterproof bag to take with you. These documents will help you prove your identity, file insurance claims, and get financial help. Mail copies to a trusted person outside your community in case your documents are destroyed. Keep originals in a safe deposit box or fireproof box.
- A radio, such as a NOAA weather radio, and extra batteries are a must to stay informed about local weather conditions.
- If you have pets, prepare a “grab and go” bag for them. Include food, water, leashes, and medication. Have a sturdy pet carrier to both provide safe transport and a secure place for the pet to rest.
- Designate a safe place in your home where your family will all go during a weather warning. Usually the best location is in the lowest part of the house away from windows. Keep your grab and go bags in this area.
- Know where your main water and gas valves are. Have a wrench to shut them off in an emergency.
- Store a three day supply of water (three gallons per person) and non-perishable foods. It is sometimes a lengthy process to establish power after a storm. Intend to use your refrigerated and freezer supplies quickly.
- In case the water supply is interrupted, keep sanitizing gels, sanitary wipes, paper towels, and toilet paper on hand. Have a plastic bucket with a tight lid to use as a portable toilet.
- Let your neighbors know when you are going to be away. If your home is damaged, emergency crews will not use valuable time and risk their safety searching for you inside.
