ORGANIZING TIPS OF THE MONTH: NOVEMBER 2008
More of My Favorite Organizing Tools
Last year I gave you a list of my top 10 organizing tools. Here are more that make organizing easier. Contact me if you need help finding sources for any of the items.
- Shelf Dividers: Use these in your closets to keep items such as handbags and stacks of sweaters from toppling over. The most effective dividers are made of heavy wire.
- Coat Hooks: Coat hooks are, of course, handy places to hang coats, hats, gloves, handbags. They are also perfect to keep book bags, lunch bags, pet leashes, dress up clothes, and umbrellas in order.
- Landing Pad: A landing pad is a container—shallow basket, decorative box, tray, sturdy bowl—to hold the items you drop off as soon as you enter the house. The landing pad keeps your keys, cell phone, wallet, watch, sunglasses together where you can readily find them.
- Laundry Basket: Each member of the household should have one. Dirty clothes have a home other than the floor. Clean clothes are easily sorted according to owner and transported back to the bedrooms.
- Magazine Rack: A basket, bin, rack, or vertical holder helps contain magazines to your favorite reading spot. Magazine racks help limit the number of magazines and catalogs you accumulate. When the holder is full, it is time to purge.
- Bill Holder: Eliminate lost bills and missed payments by having a dedicated container to place your bills that need to be paid. It can be a file folder, basket, large clip, or even a napkin holder—anything that will keep your bills front and center so you will see they need to be paid.
- Bakeware Holder/Lid Rack: These look similar to heavy duty letter sorters but are designed to hold cookie sheets, shallow baking pans, muffin tins, and lids vertically. You can slide an item out easily without digging through a pile in your cabinet.
- Slide-Out Cabinet Drawers: These eliminate the problem of items getting lost in the back of a cabinet or pantry. You can easily see what you have. No more having to get on your knees to find what you are looking for or knocking things over that are in the front of the cabinet as you reach in. (Make sure you attach the drawer rails to the shelf to prevent the drawer from tipping forward.)
- Stackable Jewelry Trays: The shallow divided trays with clear plastic tops keep your jewelry neatly sorted and easy to see. The soft lining protects the jewelry from scratches and helps keep necklaces from getting tangled. The trays stack securely in drawers and on shelves.
- Garbage Cans and Recycle Bins: These are the best organizing tools. Use them often to keep your clutter under control.
