ORGANIZING TIPS OF THE MONTH: MAY 2007
Grapple the Garage
I have just returned from the national NAPO conference for professional organizers. I learned about the latest products and a ton of new ideas from leading experts that I am eager to share with you in the coming months. Contact me at Cheryl@organizeatlanta.com for more information.
- For a total organization of the garage, it is best to take everything out, sweep, and start with a clean slate. Really.
- Divide the garage into zones for the items you store there; e.g., gardening, sports equipment, recycling, auto care, outdoor toys. Group like things together in their assigned zone.
- Make good use of vertical space. Hang racks for hats, garden aprons, and gloves. Install hooks to hold folding chairs. Mount bike racks on the wall or suspended from the ceiling to keep bikes from toppling over.
- Use clear bins on shelves to group small items.
- Do not store items that may be ruined by changes in temperature and humidity in a garage. Boxes of photos can easily mildew on a garage shelf or floor.
- Store birdseed and dry pet food in metal containers with tight fitting lids. Rodents easily gnaw into bags and plastic bins.
- Label bins and shelves to make it easier to return items where they belong.
- Place heavy duty door mats outside each door, including the door to enter from the garage to the house. The second mat will help prevent grit and grass from being tracked into the house.
- For safety, store the heaviest items on lower shelves. Store toxic items on higher shelves or locked up out of children’s reach.
- Hang garden tools separately on racks or nails. Do not store them in a clump in the corner or in one bin. You will only become frustrated when the tool you want to retrieve is tangled with the others.
