ORGANIZING TIPS OF THE MONTH: JANUARY 2007
GO Month—National Get Organized Month
Start the New Year well-organized. It is time to get All Sorted Out. Hope to see you at my workshop, How to Organize Any Room, Saturday, Feb. 3, 2007 from 10:00 a.m.-noon at Marietta High School. Register at www.mariettacommunityschool.com Contact me at Cheryl@organizeatlanta.com for more information.
- Instead of New Year’s resolutions, make Goals for Organizing. Enter the steps on the calendar, so you will complete your goals during the year.
- Winter is a great time to organize the attic—take advantage of the cool temperatures. Get rid of boxes you will never use and decide if you really want the burden of items you have stored. Never store heat sensitive items such as photos, dolls, candles, and fabrics in the attic. They will deteriorate in the wide range of temperatures and humidity of an attic.
- Get a supply of furnace filters and store them near the furnace. When you are ready to change your filter, you will not have to make a last minute trip to the hardware store.
- Place a shoe rack outside the family entry door to keep wet or muddy shoes out of the house.
- Go through your board games and put small pieces into plastic zip bags. If there are missing pieces, contact the game maker for replacements. Your games will then be in great shape for family play on bad weather days.
- Pack items for sporting events the night before the event. No more last minute searches for missing soccer shoes or game tickets.
- Purge old magazines. Get in the habit of tearing out articles, coupons, and recipes as you read instead of saving the task for later. Magazines you think you will get to eventually end up as piles of clutter. Toss the last issue when a new one arrives. You can always find a missed article on-line or at the library.
- Buy this year’s greeting cards. Take a list of birthdays and anniversaries to your favorite card shop. As you choose the cards, attach sticky notes with the recipient’s name to each card. Be prepared for the unexpected by buying a few get well, sympathy, and extra birthday cards. File the greeting cards in a box with dividers labeled by month.
- Start gathering your tax-related paperwork. Make arrangements to meet with the person who prepares your taxes.
- It’s another New Year—where does the time go? Help manage your time more effectively by placing a clock in every room. An analog clock is best, so you can visualize how much time has passed or how soon you must start another task.
