Professional Organizer Tips

ORGANIZING TIPS OF THE MONTH: FEBRUARY 2007
Help for Caregivers of Aging Parents

Organizing the living space for elderly parents can be a challenge. I am available to answer your questions by email or phone. Contact me at Cheryl@organizeatlanta.com. Many thanks to my mom for this month's tips--the voice of experience.

  • Organize the day so baths and appointments are in the morning when the parent is well rested and less agitated. Say what you are getting ready to do as you go about chores and outings; this will cut down on anxiety.
  • Move non-perishable food, dishes, and cooking utensils to lower shelves in the kitchen for easier access.
  • Remove locks from interior doors to prevent lock outs.
  • Arrange closet shelves or dresser drawers so the parent has ready access to everyday clothing.
  • Put large-print labels on drawers and shelves to make it easier to see where items are stored.
  • Keep a large-print list of important phone numbers near each phone.
  • Have a pill container for each person in the household, preferably a different color for each and labeled with the person’s name. Fill the containers at the beginning of the week to help ensure that the proper dosage is taken daily. Keep a list of all medications, dosages, and phone numbers for doctors and the pharmacy. Place copies near the phone, on the refrigerator, and in your car.
  • Plug in auto-on nightlights in the bedroom, hallway, and bathroom to reduce the risk of a fall at night.
  • Post a sign on the most used exit door with an Out the Door checklist—keys, glasses, wallet or purse, turn off appliances, lock the door, etc.
  • Clear clutter, small rugs, and easily tipped furniture from hallways and floors. They are tripping hazards.
  • Place a photo album or box of pictures of family and friends near the parent’s favorite chair. Photos give comfort during lonely times and may bring forth conversation.
