ORGANIZING TIPS OF THE MONTH: DECEMBER 2006
Ending The Year Well Organized
If you would love to get organized, ask for an All Sorted Out gift certificate. The giver can email or call for details. It’s a gift that will keep on giving by saving you time and money. Contact me at Cheryl@organizeatlanta.com for more information.
- Buy your 2007 calendar. Use your 2006 calendar as a guide to note birthdays, anniversaries, and other special occasions on the new calendar. Place sticky notes on the months you need to schedule medical and dental check ups. Record any 2007 appointments, school events, and recurring obligations. Clip the Thanksgiving notes you made last month to the November page.
- As you decorate for Christmas or Hanukkah, set aside any decorations you no longer like or use and donate them now to make someone else’s holidays festive.
- Assess the storage containers you use for decorations. If they are damaged or difficult to manage, replace them since stores are well supplied with containers at this time of year. Use clear plastic where possible and always label.
- December is a big month for giving and receiving. When you receive a gift, use the “one in, one out” rule. By getting rid of things as new items come into the home, you will prevent the build up of clutter.
- Clutter is not a gift. Think twice before you purchase some cute knick knack for someone to set on a shelf. Is it a gift or a burden? This is especially true for older gift recipients.
- Measure the clearance between the floor and bed frame before purchasing under-the-bed bins. If the bed is too low, you may want to consider getting bed risers. The space under the bed is a great place to store bins of wrapping paper, spare gifts, or out of season clothes.
- There are numerous ways to store wrapping paper, depending on your space and budget limitations. Among the options are gift wrap carts, horizontal or vertical bins, and hanging pocket systems to go on a closet rod or door. Magazine articles may show gift wrap hanging on a series of curtain rods on the wall. Such a storage method makes for a pretty magazine photo, but is difficult to manage in a home.
- When you receive an invitation, either respond immediately or mark the date to RSVP on your calendar and file the invitation in your “To Call” file. If you plan to attend the function, note the event on your calendar and move the invitation to your “Event” file after you respond. Hosts appreciate guests who let them know whether or not they will be attending a function.
- Before the year ends, gather useful but unwanted items and donate them. You will benefit others, reduce your clutter, and gain a tax deduction.
- If someone on your gift list tells you they are really ready to get organized, consider giving a gift certificate offering the services of a professional organizer. It is a wonderful present.
